New York, NY – Big Fan, written and directed by Robert Siegel, who also wrote The Wrestler, is Sharoz’s first foray into feature film-making.

Excerpt from: The Hollywood Reporter, January 27, 2009

“Technical contributions are all touchdowns, with special praise to production designer Sharoz Makarechi for the blue-collar, sports-world look.”

Excerpt from: The New York Times, January 22, 2009

“Straight out of Staten Island comes the aggressively grubby, often darkly funny “Big Fan,” the very fine feature directing debut from Robert Siegel, who wrote “The Wrestler” and was an editor at The Onion. A cautionary tale about the limits and perils of love, “Big Fan” centers on Paul (Patton Oswalt, terrific and fearless), a 35-year-old parking lot attendant who lives with his mother and whose every waking hour is devoted to his beloved New York Giants. That love takes an unexpectedly dramatic turn when Paul and his closest (only) friend, Sal (the Sundance fixture Kevin Corrigan, priceless), have an unexpected late-night encounter with Paul’s favorite Giants player, who does not return his fan’s love in gentle kind. Unlike many hapless American movie characters, Paul comes with a personality rather than a character arc.”

New York, NY – If there is one food category that needs fresh thinking its fast food. Think Tank 3 has been retained by Kolache Mama to help introduce New Yorkers to the Kolache, and their first proprietor in NYC. Initially an Eastern European staple, the flaky pastry filled with a variety of hearty fillings is to be served in a small efficient storefront built with care using sustainable materials. Point being the food at Kolache Mama might be fast but it’s for foodies, not fast food junkies. Stay tuned for opening date at http://www.KolacheMama.com

New York, NY – Imagine the sound of something existing. The frequency of an object simply existing, possibly wishing it was something other than what it is, doing something more that it’s maker intended, to be judged as more than what simply meets the eye. Convinced that everything has a sound, multimedia artist duo, GAINES, Latham and Shelby, ignore the often too rigid line between fine, visual, performance, representational and musical art.

GAINES transforms otherwise inanimate objects ranging from broom to chair to a vintage doctor’s bag into beings with a story and a soundtrack for thier lives, so to speak.

Each of the one of a kind pieces in this series functions as sculpture and musical instrument, complete with amp which GAINES will “play” on opening night.

FOUND SOUND, a debut collection for GAINES is curated by Sharoz Makarechi, and will be on exhibit and available to private collectors for the first time in New York City at Think Tank 3, beginning December, 11 2007.

Exhibit Location: Think Tank 3 447 Hudson Street, NYC 10014
Artist Reception: December 11th 7:00pm
Gallery Open to Public: 10-6 PM (Monday-Friday)

New York, NY – Blog, blog, blog. It’s part of our vernacular now. Blogger is not just the name of an application that allows anyone to publish online, it’s a title. Something we see scroll beneath the names of people like Arianna Huffington when being interviewed on HBO’s Real TIme with Bill Maher. And though most of what’s in the blogosphere (that’s what they’re calling it!) is more akin to a personal journal or dirty laundry airing out in a public space, there are some blogs that make sense, bring pleasure to their readers, and become that one place where brilliant but yet to be discovered thinkers, think out loud. Case in point: Teddy Vegas’ RANDOM ACTS OF COMMENTARY. It’s art meeting life at the intersection of relevance and culture. And it’s worth a read and a reading. Come see and hear Teddy Vegas read from his blog. If nothing else you’ll be attending the first ever BLOG READING (that we know of) by a yet to be discovered genius.

THE ARTIST

The product of a hysterical pregnancy, Teddy Vegas (aka Teddy Cohn) was paralyzed from the neck-up for the first thirty-five years of his life. Today he is a non-practicing atheist and devoted meta-commentator living in NYC with his Pet Peeve. He is currently working on a collection of titles for an autobiography he will never write.

New York, NY – Thought for Food is the intersection of ART and LITERATURE. Oil paintings by a writer. Ilana Simons paints portraits of literary influences, philosophers, and geniuses of generations past in oil on PAPER PLATES. But that’s not all. She writes. In fact she’s a writer first, with a PhD in English and a teaching post at The New School in New York City. Join us for her debut as a modern day artist.

Ilana Simons will read for the first time from her first book at Think Tank 3 on August 15, 2007 at 7PM.

Her book, A Life of One’s Own: A Guide to Better Living through the Work and Wisdom of Virginia Woolf will be released by Penguin publishing on August 28. At which point Ilana will be here to read and discuss the work once again.

Artist Statement:

Virginia Woolf never went to college, but she was desperate to engage with the old minds we call Geniuses. So she read all day in her bedroom and produced some fantastically unconventional novels.

Woolf shows that to turn “Grand Ideas” to use, we’ve got to find our own personal hooks-our real, sensual attachments. My portraits of philosophers on paper plates and my book, are parallel projects in Woolf’s spirit: to find the palatable in otherwise-intimidating minds.

–

THE ARTIST

Ilana Simons received her English PhD in 2003 and teaches at the New School in New York City. She won the Willy Gorrissen Award for Teaching Excellence and the Molberger Fellowship for modernis scholarship while a graduate student at New York University. She is the British literature moderator for the online Barnes & Noble Classics Book Club and is also currently in training as a clinical psychologist.

New York, NY – When people think about famous boxers they don’t usually think of Jews. Yet between 1910 and 1940 there were 27 Jewish world champions and for years, working-class Jewish immigrants were the sport’s dominant ethnic group.

This series, oil paintings and drawings of Jewish boxers by Brooklyn-based artist Charles Miller, were inspired by the artist’s passion for the sport and for the stories of fighters like Jackie “Kid” Berg, a.k.a. “The Whitechapel Whirlwind,” Lew Tendler, and Barney Ross, to name a few, who contributed so much to the rich history of American boxing in its Golden Age but today are all but forgotten.

The exhibit celebrates these always brave, strong and ambitious fighters, who were often simply looking for fast money to support their families or avoid sweatshop labor, much like their Irish and Italian fighting counterparts.

Each of the various sized pieces in the series features an individual Jewish boxer in period gear, sometimes bare fisted, sometimes in training mode, sometimes in the ring, but usually as if posing for a photograph. Charles Miller’s Jewish Boxers, curated by Sharoz Makarechi, will be on exhibit and available to private collectors for the first time in New York City at Think Tank 3, beginning January 25, 2007.

New York, NY – While we knew the subject matter of this exhibit was culturally relevant we never expected that during the course of a two month exhibit, Saddam Hussein would be both sentenced and executed by hanging. The exhibit was noted on the front page of the New York Sun on Nov. 6, 2006 followed by a comprehensive article in their Gallery Going/Arts section. We kept the exhibit up longer than originally planned given that the public is increasingly more contemplative about this piece of our shared history and the brand that Saddam built. Saddam Mania will continue to hang for a little while, and prints will be available for collection for another week as we prepare for our next exhibit and opening; Jewish Boxers on January 25th.
