November 26 , 2007 FOUND SOUND AT THINK TANK 3. New York, NY - Imagine the sound of something existing. The frequency of an object simply existing, possibly wishing it was something other than what it is, doing something more that it’s maker intended, to be judged as more than what simply meets the eye. Convinced that everything has a sound, multimedia artist duo, GAINES, Latham and Shelby, ignore the often too rigid line between fine, visual, performance, representational and musical art.

THINK TANK 3
Think Tank 3 is A MODERN DAY THINK SHOP; our idea of what a modern ad agency should be. We work with clients including Comedy Central, The Coca Cola Company, out of a storefront in NYC where our creative director curates exhibits, hosts readings, talks, etc. Previous exhibits and events include: SADDAM MANIA by Teun Voeten, JEWISH BOXERS by Charles Miller, and an ongoing BLOG meet-up and reading series.
September 13 , 2007 THINK TANK 3 PRESENTS RANDOM ACTS OF COMMENTARY BY TEDDY VEGAS. New York, NY - Blog, blog, blog. It's part of our vernacular now. Blogger is not just the name of an application that allows anyone to publish online, it's a title. Something we see scroll beneath the names of people like Arianna Huffington when being interviewed on HBO's Real TIme with Bill Maher. And though most of what's in the blogosphere (that's what they're calling it!) is more akin to a personal journal or dirty laundry airing out in a public space, there are some blogs that make sense, bring pleasure to their readers, and become that one place where brilliant but yet to be discovered thinkers, think out loud. Case in point: Teddy Vegas' RANDOM ACTS OF COMMENTARY. It's art meeting life at the intersection of relevance and culture. And it's worth a read and a reading. Come see and hear Teddy Vegas read from his blog. If nothing else you'll be attending the first ever BLOG READING (that we know of) by a yet to be discovered genius.

August 2 , 2007 THOUGHT FOR FOOD AT THINK TANK 3. New York, NY - Thought for Food is the intersection of ART and LITERATURE. Oil paintings by a writer. Ilana Simons paints portraits of literary influences, philosophers, and geniuses of generations past in oil on PAPER PLATES. But that's not all. She writes. In fact she's a writer first, with a PhD in English and a teaching post at The New School in New York City. Join us for her debut as a modern day artist.
Ilana Simons will read for the first time from her first book at Think Tank 3 on August 15, 2007 at 7PM.
Her book, A Life of One's Own: A Guide to Better Living through the Work and Wisdom of Virginia Woolf will be released by Penguin publishing on August 28. At which point Ilana will be here to read and discuss the work once again.
Artist Statement:
Woolf shows that to turn "Grand Ideas" to use, we've got to find our own personal hooks-our real, sensual attachments. My portraits of philosophers on paper plates and my book, are parallel projects in Woolf's spirit: to find the palatable in otherwise-intimidating minds.

Think Tank 3 is A MODERN DAY THINK SHOP; our idea of what a modern ad agency should be. We work with clients including Comedy Central, The Coca Cola Company, and TiVo out of a storefront in NYC where our creative director curates exhibits based on cultural relevance, historical value, and quality. Our last exhibit was JEWISH BOXERS oil paintings of Jewish boxers who dominated the sport from 1910-1940 by Charles Miller, was shortlisted by The New Yorker.

January 19 , 2007 JEWISH BOXERS AT THINK TANK 3.
New York, NY - When people think about famous boxers they don't usually think of Jews. Yet between 1910 and 1940 there were 27 Jewish world champions and for years, working-class Jewish immigrants were the sport's dominant ethnic group.
This series, oil paintings and drawings of Jewish boxers by Brooklyn-based artist Charles Miller, were inspired by the artist's passion for the sport and for the stories of fighters like Jackie "Kid" Berg, a.k.a. "The Whitechapel Whirlwind," Lew Tendler, and Barney Ross, to name a few, who contributed so much to the rich history of American boxing in its Golden Age but today are all but forgotten.
The exhibit celebrates these always brave, strong and ambitious fighters, who were often simply looking for fast money to support their families or avoid sweatshop labor, much like their Irish and Italian fighting counterparts.
Each of the various sized pieces in the series features an individual Jewish boxer in period gear, sometimes bare fisted, sometimes in training mode, sometimes in the ring, but usually as if posing for a photograph. Charles Miller's Jewish Boxers, curated by Sharoz Makarechi, will be on exhibit and available to private collectors for the first time in New York City at Think Tank 3, beginning January 25, 2007.

We work with clients including Comedy Central, The Coca Cola Company, and TiVo out of a storefront in NYC where our creative director curates exhibits based on cultural relevance, historical value, and quality. January 3 , 2007 THINK TANK 3 GETS TAPPED BY COCA-COLA. New York, NY - The second most recognized word in the world is Coke. The first is OK. Why? Because The Coca Cola Company knows the value of smart brand communications. They have W+K, CPB, and now, they have Think Tank 3. January 3 , 2007 THINK TANK 3 SIGNS CONTENT DEVELOPMENT DEAL WITH COMEDY CENTRAL. New York, NY - One word. Kabob. Repeated many times. Kabob, kabob kabob. January 3 , 2007 SADDAM'S STILL HANGING ON HUDSON STREET. New York, NY - While we knew the subject matter of this exhibit was culturally relevant we never expected that during the course of a two month exhibit, Saddam Hussein would be both sentenced and executed by hanging. The exhibit was noted on the front page of the New York Sun on Nov. 6, 2006 followed by a comprehensive article in their Gallery Going/Arts section. We kept the exhibit up longer than originally planned given that the public is increasingly more contemplative about this piece of our shared history and the brand that Saddam built. Saddam Mania will continue to hang for a little while, and prints will be available for collection for another week as we prepare for our next exhibit and opening; Jewish Boxers on January 25th. Teun Voeten | http://www.teunvoeten.com/ October 9, 2006 THINK TANK 3 FAST FORWARDED BY TiVo.
New York, NY - Think Tank 3 has been been hired as creative strategists for TiVo, the world's best DVR. Think Tank 3 will be developing ideas across mutliple platforms including developing viral ideas. For online initiatives Think Tank 3 has teamed up with the Barbarian Group, creators of Subservient Chicken for Miami based Crispin Porter, Burger King's agency of record.
Harris Silver categorically denies that Think Tank 3 is in conversations with the comedian Sara Silverman to be 'TiVo Guy'. "Look. Just because she's funny and we know she'll watch anything doesn't mean she would be the right representative. I mean there's a new TiVo feature called Kid Zone which protects your kids from her potty mouth and other inappropriate content for kids which is a huge issue for parents these days." He paused and then added "Plus she's not a guy".
September 24, 2006 THINK SADDAM MANIA at THINK TANK 3. New York, NY - Saddam Mania is a complex and challenging photo exhibit of images of Iraq's former leader that carves out new unexplored territory at the intersection of Art and Journalism. Award winning photojournalist Teun Voeten artfully documented posters, statues and murals of Saddam while arriving in Baghdad on April 13th 2003, a few days after the fall of the dictator. According to Voeten "Most of the images which were omnipresent in Baghdad when I arrived were torn down or destroyed and had disappeared in a matter of days after I documented them". This series has never been on exhibit before and cannot be seen anywhere else. In these photos–which are in fact images of images–we see Saddam as military hero, Saddam as religious icon, Saddam as fatherly figure. Saddam as triumphant dictator. The images are highly nuanced and have many layers of meaning as we are not just looking at images of images of Saddam but also of the people trying to destroy and deface them. The bold colors and contextual settings give them a unique graphic quality and seen together, they act as a reminder, perhaps even a warning, to the influence one man had over so many, for so long. The exhibit is curated by Sharoz Makarechi, founder and creative director of Think Tank 3, Modern Day Think-Shop. This is the first exhibit by Think Tank 3 at their new storefront location, and will open to the public on Oct. 25. According to Makarechi: "Saddam built himself, essentially an imposing brand by commissioning these images and statues--to a level that requires more than taking them down to take his power away from him. The series, perhaps despite itself, demonstrates the disparity between the destruction of reminders of Saddam, and the fact that Saddam is to this day holding his own in court." For better or for worse these images are now part of our history, as Iraq and The United States have violently collided twice, under father-son Bush Presidencies. This story, his story, is now part of our story too. ABOUT

Southampton, NY - It was a sunny January day, conditions looked good and the decision was made. Two and a half hours later, struggling out of their winter wetsuits, it was done. The Think Tank 3 surf season had officially begun. Harris Silver, president of Think Tank 3 and founder of Citystreets, a NYC based pedestrian advocacy organization, has been invited back and is scheduled to speak at the Apple Store in SOHO NY again, on Wednesday, April 21, at 6:30 PM. Yes, it's true, Citystreets uses Macs to change the world--or at least nudge it a bit. The talk, part of the "Made on A Mac" lecture series, will focus on the connection between the underlying ideas that fuel Citystreets and the tools Apple creates to help realize them. If you spend too much time in front of a computer that frustrates you instead of inspires you, have an issue that you want more people to know about, are an urbanist at heart, work with a non-profit organization, want to see touch and ride a Segway, or otherwise live, work, and play here and want to have a unique, "Only in New York" type of experience, this event might be of interest to you. Starting with "flatso"--the name for the stencil art--now used by people on 3 continents in 7 cities to memorialize pedestrian fatalities, every piece of communication created by Citystreets has been thoughtfully considered and expressed via Mac. More advanced use of Apple products include the "subversive editing" of an inaccurate commercial released by the politically motivated Office Of National Drug Control Policy, to achieve a more truthful and meaningful message. Think Tank 3, New York, was tapped by Riverkeeper, a New York based environmental group, to create a powerful series of print and street ads designed to mobilize New York City residents to push for the permanent retirement of the Indian Point nuclear power plant, located just 22 miles north of the city. The ads are part of Riverkeeper's latest media campaign which seeks to build additional momentum toward its goal of shutting down the dangerous plant run by Entergy, a Louisiana-based megacorp. Think Tank 3's creative strategy makes a connection between the vulnerability of a nuclear power plant situated so close to NYC and the now colloquial phrase "Weapons of Mass Destruction". In addition to educating the public about the threat that Indian Point poses, the ads encourage people to call Governor Pataki and make their concerns known. Before 9/11, no one thought of airplanes as weapons. It's the same with nuclear power plants, especially Indian Point because of it's proximity to NYC and the millions of people that live nearby (20+ million). To see the first ad in the campaign, purchase The New York Times today 06/10/2003 and turn to the Op-ed page (last page of first section). are interested in knowing what else Mxyplyzyk has to offer can't just
come down to the store, simply because they live far away. "Mxyplyzyk is filled with a range of beautifully designed stuff-- kind of like a general store for people with really good taste. I wish everyone could experience the store in person." said Sharoz Makarechi Creative Director of Think Tank 3. Responsible for photography, design, writing, and production, Think Tank 3 created a site that is simultaneously product-focused and reflective of the attitude and whimsy of the store. Although items are available for sale, Mxyplyzyk.com is not an e-commerce site. "It's simply a way to reach out to people who don't live in NYC but happen to read the Home Design section of the New York Times every week." Makarechi added. Think Tank 3 will continue to work on brand building and promotional efforts on behalf of Mxyplyzyk. See the site at http://www.mxyplyzyk.com and bookmark it because Mxyplyzyk isn't all that easy to spell. ---- August 17, 2002 For Immediate Release WHERE DO TERRORISTS GET THEIR MONEY? New York, NY-- Recently, the US Government spent $150 million dollars on an advertising campaign that tied drug use to the war on terrorism in heavily aired commercials released by the Office Of National Drug Control Policy. This effort has been challenged by a parody commercial that shows the true source of terrorist funding. The commercial is called "AK47-Redux" and was created for Citystreets, New York's only pedestrian advocacy organization. While it is a well known fact that 15 of the 19 9/11 terrorists were from Saudi Arabia, it is less known that Saudi rulers use oil dollars to fund Wahabism a fundamentalist sect of Islam, which is responsible for radicalizing the Muslim world. "AK47-Redux" makes a direct connection with consumer's culpability by pointing out that they fund terrorism every time they fill up at the gas pump. Sharoz Makarechi, Creative Director of Think Tank 3 said, "The first spot from the Office Of National Drug Control Policy definitely caught my attention. I presented it to my students at SVA as an example of a great creative execution with a misguided strategy. When the Citystreets assignment came up I realized the best way to tell the truth was to expose what wasn't true." Matt Dugas, one of the creatives who worked on "AK47-Redux" said "The government wasted a lot of taxpayer money by producing a campaign with such an inaccurate message. At least we didn't let good footage go to waste." He added smiling. To see "AK47-Redux" visit http://www.citystreets.org. and click on "Where do terrorists get their money?" ---- May 8, 2002 Sharoz Makarechi Creative Director of Think Tank 3 has just won a Pencil from the One Club for Writing, Art-Directing, and Creative-Directing "Home" an interactive commercial designed to raise awareness to the increase in Homelessness in NYC after the destructive acts of 9.11. "Home" is the second in a series. The first interactive commercial in the series "Hungry" was created by Think Tank 3 for their client Fusebox, a silicon alley professional services firm.
